Gallery 3 - old postcards of La Crosse - old Post Office
The old Post Office
The old Post Office was built in 1890, on the north side of State Street, between 4th and 5th Streets. The current post office downtown was built just to the east of the old one (and later expanded to include the area where this old post office had stood). After much debate and controversy, it was finally decided that the old building would be torn down when the new post office was ready to take over. The sight of that familiar old tower on the northeast corner of State and 4th Streets came to an end when the building was demolished in 1977... but in the midst of the controversy over its fate, a group of preservation-minded residents had decided to organize in 1976, in an effort to encourage more preservation and fewer demolitions of La Crosse's old landmarks in the future. They named their organization Preservation Alliance of La Crosse.
